Paint & Fiber

Marilyn Henrion will introducing new works from her latest series Meditations at the group exhibition Paint & Fiber at the Noho Gallery, New York, NY.

Her silk wall reliefs consist of modular units that can be purchased as complete compositions or as individual panels to be arranged as you please. Site-specific commissions are welcomed.

If you are a New York City Designer (or if you know a friend who is), let them know that the Design Store is holding an Open Call for those residing in the Five Boroughs to submit work for the 2013 product collection.

Anything from accessories to the freshest furniture design is welcome for submission, as long as the items are near or close to the production stage, manufactured within the continental US and can be shipped to MoMA in salable condition.

Come and visit the Kenan Center in Lockport, NY to wander through “100 American Craftsmen: Celebrating the Art of Craft”. This is a juried craft show with artisans in textiles, wood, ceramics and others. The show will be open June 1 (until 9pm), June 2 (10am-6pm) and June 3 (11am-5pm). There is a $6 admission. Come and join the fun!

We have an exciting upcoming event to tell you about. Our own co-rep, Madona Cole-Lacy is spearheading an empowerment workshop for college bound students through her My Time Has Come art-related culture and social enrichment initiative. The event takes place Saturday, June 9, 2012 9am-5pm. Registration is by May 25th.

Also Madona would like to invite interested members in the area to assist with her textile designing workshop which starts around 2:45pm until 4:30pm. Please contact Madona directly at (516) 783-9178.

New York SDA Member, Jappie King Black (a mixed media artist who works in fiber and textile) will be participating in the 1st Annual Brockport Artists’ Guild Show.

The show will be at A Different Path Gallery in Brockport, New York and will be up now through May 26th and tonight will be a reception from 6-9 pm.

Eye of Providence

Bob Turan designed the Eye of Providence for the Showhouse’s rooftop garden. It is constructed of welded stainless steel, painted mild steel and polished concrete with embedded blue glass. The design is reminiscent of arcane symbols and Masonic imagery. The pyramid-shaped center piece with its “eye” can rotate with the wind.  ThsEye of Providence is 3’ x 3’ x 6’ including its steel pedestal and weighs 300 pounds.

SDA member Jessie Fair was one of a few hand selected international artists to be commissioned to design prints for H&M’s 2012 Fashion Against Aids Collection.  Three of Fair’s vibrant hand-dyed textile designs were featured in multiple pieces in the collection, including the kimono, top, and beach towel seen below.  In stores April 26th, 25% of all sales will go directly to international youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects.  See H&M’s full press release at, http://about.hm.com/content/hm/NewsroomSection/en/NewsRoom/NewsroomDetails/Fashion-against-aids.html



Jessie Fair is a fiber and mixed media artist based in New York.  Her work combines hand dyeing, painting, felting, stitching and collage.
